What is Pantoprazole Sodium

Pantoprazole sodium, marketed under the name Protonix, is an organic sodium salt of Pantoprazole. It is a first-generation proton pump inhibitor that brings about a reduction in the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach.

It came into medical use in Germany in 1994. Pantoprazole can be taken orally in the form of either a tablet or a liquid suspension, or it can be administered intravenously (IV). It is available as a generic medication.

Macsen Laboratories is the supplier of high-quality Pantoprazole sodium with ISO certification.

Mechanism of Action

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It binds to the sulfhydryl group of H+, K+-ATPase, an enzyme responsible for speeding the final step in the acid secretion route. The inactivation of the enzyme inhibits stomach acid output, which in turn relieves acid-related indigestion and heartburn.

Uses

  • Pantoprazole is used for short-term treatment of the symptoms of esophagitis (erosion and ulceration of the oesophagus) caused by stomach acid due to gastroesophageal reflux disease for adults and children five years of age and older.
  • It may sometimes be combined with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori-caused ulcers.
  • It is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (pathological hypersecretory condition).
  • It may be used to prevent gastric ulcers in those taking NSAIDs.
