Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is an adenine analogue. It is a prescription medicine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is sold under the trade name Videar among others and is generally used with other antiretrovirals to treat chronic hepatitis B and to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. It is available in combinations such as  emtricitabine/tenofovir, efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir, and elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir.

Tenofovir was licensed for use in the United States in 2001 after being patented in 1996. It is listed as an essential medicine by the World Health Organization. As of 2017, it is available as a generic drug in the United States.

Uses

• Tenofovir disoproxil is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in patients ≥2 years old and weighing ≥10 kg.
• Tenofovir is prescribed for chronic hepatitis B patients who are 12 years of age or older.
• Furthermore, tenofovir disoproxil is available in conjunction with emtricitabine (under the brand name Truvada) for use as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in at-risk adults and adolescents weighing more than 35kg to minimise the risk of sexually-transmitted HIV-1 infection.
