Q. What is Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) ?

Lumpy skin disease, or LSD, is an infectious disease that affects cattle and is caused by a virus which belongs to the genus Capripoxvirus, and is characterized by the development of nodules or lumps on the skin of affected animals. Other common symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, and general weakness. It also leads to decreased milk production, weight loss, and decreased fertility in affected animals.

It primarily affects cattle, including both domestic and wild species, but it can also infect water buffalo, yaks, and other bovine species. The disease is primarily transmitted through insect vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks but can also spread through direct contact with infected animals.

There is no specific treatment for Lumpy Skin Disease, although we can focus on supportive care and control measures. Some of the measures which can be implemented include –

• Antiviral treatment with Methylene Blue.
