Hyaluronic Acid Chemical Structure

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (conjugate base hyaluronate), also known as hyaluronan, is an anionic, nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan. It was first isolated in 1934 from the bovine eye by Karl Meyer and John Palmer. It is a gooey, slippery substance that the body produces naturally and is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. It is also a major component of skin, where it is involved in repairing tissue.

Macsen Laboratories is the leading supplier of Hyaluronic Acid with ISO certification.

Uses

Owing to its versatile properties, hyaluronic acid (HA) is used in various medical and cosmetic applications. Some of the primary uses of hyaluronic acid are as follows:

In Skincare and Cosmetics –

  • HA is a popular ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and face masks because of its ability to hydrate and retain water in the skin, leading to a plumper, more youthful appearance.
  • It is commonly found in anti-aging products as it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • It can accelerate skin regeneration and healing, making it beneficial in products designed for sensitive or post-procedure skin.

In Medical –

  • It is FDA-approved to treat osteoarthritis of the knee via intra-articular injection. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, potentially providing pain relief and improved mobility.
  • HA is used to treat dry eye. It is a component in certain eye drop formulations and helps by providing lubrication and forming a moisture-retaining film on the eye surface.
  • It can promote healing in skin wounds, burns, and ulcers by regulating inflammation, stimulating tissue regeneration, and maintaining a moist wound environment.
  • It is also used as a dermal filler in cosmetic surgery. HA-based fillers are injected into the skin to restore lost volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.
  • Oral HA supplements are also available in the market for supporting joint health and to provide skin benefits like promoting skin hydration and improving skin texture and appearance.

Side effects

Side effects associated with the use of hyaluronic acid are as follows –

  • Upon topical application, some individuals might experience skin sensitivity or irritation or allergic reactions to HA-containing products, as redness, itching, or dermatitis.
  • When used as an injectable, it may cause pain, swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site. Some people might also notice lumps or bluish discoloration of the skin in the area where HA was injected.
  • Oral HA supplements may sometimes cause digestive issues such as bloating or discomfort.
