Indigo carmine (acid form) comes from the indolone class, which is synthesized by formal 2,2′-oxidative coupling of two molecules of 3-oxo-2,3-dihydroindole-5-sulfonic acids. It’s used as a food colouring agent as well as a histological dye. It’s a ring assembly, an olefinic compound, an enone, an arenesulfonic acid, and an indolone. It’s an indigo carmine conjugate acid.
It is used in the visualization of ureteral orifices during cystoscopy and ureteral catheterization.
